THOMAS J. DOWNEY. TLS: "Thomas J. Downey", 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1975 June 16. On his Congressional letterhead, listing Downey as a member of the Committee on Armed Services and Select Committee on Aging, to Dr. Herman R. Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for Equal Education Opportunity, Washington, D.C. In full: "Amityville School District has submitted its proposal for funding under the Emergency School Aid Act to you (sic) office. I would like to take this opportunity to strongly endorse this proposal and urge that you act favorably upon it. The school district personnel have proven to me to be an enthusiastic and highly motivated group of individuals, deeply concerned about the academic progress of their district. You will note a decrease in the amount of money currently requested from last year's request. The present proposal is for $294,000 and the Amityville Board of Education has voted to absorb the difference in the local budget. This difference of $91,000 is significant in proving that the people of Amityville are willing to personally sacrifice to ensure quality education. Again, in light of Amityville's proven interest and progress in educational achievement, it is my hope that you will give the Amityville proposal your every consideration." Democrat THOMAS JOSEPH DOWNEY (born in 1949) was a U.S. Representative from New York from 1975-1993. Dr. HERMAN GOLDBERG was with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare during the mandatory desegregation of public schools. In August 1975, two months after Downey wrote this letter to him, Goldberg traveled to Boston to oversee the city's school desegregation. Staple holes at upper left corner. Fine condition.
