The British baritone pens his name on this yellow album leaf in 1968
Signature: “Thomas Hemsley/ Stratford/ 15/12/68”, in blue ink, 5¼x3¾. Thomas Jeffrey Hemsley (1927-2013) was an English baritone. In 1951, he made his debut at the Mermaid Theatre in London as Aeneas in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Hemsley is best known for his interpretations of German music such as his masterful performance of the role of Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. He was principal baritone of several operas: the Aachen Opera (1953-1956), the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (1956-1963), and the Zürich Opera (1962-1967). In addition to his illustrious performance career, Hemsley taught at both the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Dartington International Summer School. Signer on verso merits further research.
