THOMAS J. LIPTON
Tea merchant and philanthropist lends his yacht to transport a medical staff.
Photograph Mount signed: "Thomas J. Lipton". Sepia, 12x10 overall, image 8x6 (two surfaces). Sentiment in the hand of a secretary: "with every good wish/Yrs. Faithfully". Photograph captioned: "The Duchess of Westminster's Hospital Nurses and Doctors, on board the/Steam Yacht 'Erin,' Havre, September 30th, 1914." The tea merchant and yachtsman is pictured in the center. Mount is creased, not at signature, else fine. Accompanied by a 1982 letter from Allied Supplies Limited, Distributors of Lipton Tea, about the photograph. In part: "The photograph you describe depicts the steam yacht 'Erin', which belonged to Sir Thomas Lipton, at the start of her wartime adventures...soon after the outbreak of war in 1914 the Duchess of Westminster suggested to Sir Thomas that she should equip a hospital for France and that the Erin should be used to take it across the Channel. The hospital consisted of 10 doctors, 20 nursing sisters and 62 orderlies, and the photograph must therefore show them on arrival in France...She was sunk in the Mediterranean...as she went to the assistance of a torpedoes cruiser...." Lightly creased. Fine condition. Lipton had already achieved great success as a grocery retailer, merchandiser and promoter before his name became associated with tea. The creator of the idea of tea custom blended for various climates and selling tea in prepackaged bags, he turned his energies to promote tea to America in 1890. By 1909, he had established a blending and packaging plant in Manhattan. Lipton also became known for his philanthropies, which included aiding the poor and building hospitals. Two items.
