Thomas Jefferson “Tom” Steed (1904-1983) was an Oklahoma congressman who served in the U.S. House from 1949 to 1981. After dropping out of high school following his first semester, Steed began working with the “Ada Evening News.” Steed continued to work with Oklahoma daily newspapers for twenty years, culminating with a four-year stint as managing editor of the Shawnee News and Star. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and worked with Antiaircraft Artillery. He then joined the Office of War Information in 1944 and went on to serve with the information division in the India-Burma Theater (1945). Steed was elected to the 81st and to the fifteen Congresses that followed as a Democrat. He was chairman of the Committee on Small Business throughout the duration of the 94th Congress. A section of Interstate 40 near Shawnee, Oklahoma was renamed the “Tom Steed Memorial Highway” in his honor. The Reservoir near Mountain Park in Oklahoma is named after him as well. Lightly toned.
