THOMAS L. JAMES. Autograph Letter signed: "Thos: L. James", 1p, 5½x8½ with blank integral leaf. New York, N.Y., 1885 September 28. On letterhead of Lincoln National Bank, Thomas L. James, President to Thomas C. Acton. In full: "This will introduce Mr. Paton, of Edinburgh, Scotland, who wishes to see the Sub. Treasury. Will you kindly gratify him. Very truly yours". Thomas Lemuel JAMES (1831-1916) was Postmaster General in the Garfield administration (1881). He later served as mayor of Tenafly, New Jersey (1896). The letter's recipient, Thomas C. ACTON, had been New York City's police commissioner during the bloody draft riots of 1863. Ink transfer in blank lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
