1p, 4¾x7¾. New York, N.Y., 1891 February 9. On letterhead of The Lincoln
National Bank to Mr. Julius Strouse, Delevan, Illinois. In full: "I am
in receipt of your letter of the 2nd and in reply I beg to state that I have not
a spare copy of General Garfield's manuscript in my possession. Very truly
yours". Thomas Lemuel James (1831-1916) was Postmaster General in the
Garfield administration (1881). He later served as mayor of Tenafly, New
Jersey (1896). Pencil notes (unknown hand) in top and bottom margins. Slightly
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
