THOMAS L. JAMES. Typed Letter signed: "Thos: L. James", 1p, 8x10½. New York, N.Y., 1895 March 23. On letterhead of The Lincoln National Bank to Cromwell Steamship Company, Pier 9, North River, [New York] City. In full: "Let me acknowledge receipt of your congratulatory note of the 13th inst., and thank you for same. The signature to your letter recalls the owner of it to my mind with pleasurable emotion, and I must reciprocate his expression of good wishes.. Very truly yours". Thomas Lemuel James (1831-1916) was Postmaster General in the Garfield administration (1881). He later served as mayor of Tenafly, New Jersey (1896). Lightly creased and soiled. Vertical fold crosses "o" of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
