The Nobel Prize winning author agrees to have his essay on George Bernard Shaw included in a collection for a fee of $200.00.
Typed Letter signed: "Thomas Mann", 1 page, 8½x11. Erlenbach-Zuerich, 1953 February 15. Written to "Dear Miss Lincoln". In part: "I agree with pleasure to your suggestion of including my essay on George Bernard Shaw in the collection you are planning. The article has appeared exclusively in 'The listener' and has never been published in the United States. I would propose a fee of $200." Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a German author and essayist won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. His best known works include Buddenbrooks (1901), Death in Venice (1912) and The Magic Mountain (1924). Mann, who would die in Zürich in 1955, first moved to Switzerland in 1933. He became an American citizen in 1940, living in Santa Monica, California from 1941-1953. Creased. Two ½-inch tears at upper blank edge (all paper intact). Staple holes at upper left blank corner. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
