He sends a letter of thanks to a friend, dated in 1933
Typed Letter Signed: "Thomas Mann", 1p, 7¼x11. Küsnacht, Zurich, Switzerland, 1933
December 12. On his personal letterhead to an unknown recipient. In German, translated:
"Dear Sir: I thank you very much, for your letter dating the 3rd of December. I feel honored and
grateful for your invitation, but have to turn it down temporarily. I had to postpone my plans for a
journey through the United States, because I want to wait for a big job, which will take my full
attention, to be finished. Besides that, I am occupied with a Swiss travel of lectures in the time of
the invitation. Yours very sincerely". Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a German author and
essayist won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. His best known works include
Buddenbrooks (1901), Death in Venice (1912) and The Magic Mountain (1924). Mann,
who would die in Zürich in 1955, first moved to Switzerland in 1933. He became an
American citizen in 1940, living in Santa Monica, California from 1941-1953. Creased with
folds, not at signature. Paper clip impression at upper margin. 2, ¼-inch vertical separations at
upper margin (all intact). Otherwise, fine condition.
