Overall, fine condition. Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a German author and essayist who lived in Switzerland and the U.S. after Hitler came to power, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. His best known works include Buddenbrooks (1901), Death in Venice (1912) and The Magic Mountain (1924). Mann, who would die in Zürich in 1955, first moved to Switzerland in 1933. He became an American citizen in 1940, living in Santa Monica, California from 1941-1953. Although he had received the Goethe Prize Weimar (East Germany) and Frankfurt (West Germany) the year before he signed this letter, Mann declined to return to his native Germany, settling permanently in Switzerland after leaving the U.S. Two items.
