THOMAS McCALL. TLS: "Tom McCall" as Governor-Elect of
Oregon, 1p, 7¼x10½. Salem, Oregon, 1966 November 30. On imprinted
letterhead to Mr. E.P. McKean-Smith, West Coast Telephone Company, Everett,
Washington. In full: "Audrey and I want you to know how grateful we
are for your congratulations. It was a hard tussle, well fought by both
candidates, and we are very gratified at the vote of confidence the people of
Oregon have expressed. The foundation of our campaign was the heartwarming
championing of our cause by so many friends. Best regards." McCall, who
had faced opposition from his own Party, had been elected Governor of Oregon
earlier in November, defeating Robert Straub. Republican Thomas Lawson
McCall (1913-1983) was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Congress from Oregon
in 1954 before serving as Oregon's Secretary of State (1965-1967) and
Governor of Oregon (1967-1975). He is perhaps best known for his 1971
quote in which he implored people not to move to the state. Before beginning
his political career, McCall, who had a journalism degree, worked for "The
Oregonian" newspaper and was a radio news announcer. During WWII,
while serving in the U.S. Navy, he was a war correspondent in the
Pacific. Returning home, McCall had a nightly radio talk show. After
leaving office, McCall became a television news analyst and ran again
for Governor in 1978, but was defeated in the primary. Slightly creased with
folds, horizontal fold underlines signature. Fine condition.
