Grant of land to one of Philadelphia's most prominent doctors
Land Grant Signed: "Tho Mifflin" as Governor of Pennsylvania and "A.J.
Dallas" as Secretary. One page. 15½x12¾. No place, December 2, 1793. On
vellum. In part: "Ye that in consideration of the monies paid by Charles Marshall
into the Receiver Generals Office of this Commonwealth…and of the sum of One
pound & nine pence lawful money now paid by Dr Adam Kuhn into said Office
here…granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said Dr Adam Kuhn a certain
Tract of land called 'Charlton' Situate on the South branch of Tioga in the late
Purchase Northumberland County…Containing Six hundred and two acres fifty
two perches…which said Tract was Surveyed in pursuance of a Warrant dated 17
May 1785 No 499 granted to the said Charles Marshall who by Deed dated the 18
February 1793 conveyed the same to the said Dr. Adam Kuhn…." Adam Kuhn
(1741-1817), sailed for Europe in 1761 to take a course at the University of
Upsala in Sweden, where he arrived in January 1762. He studied medicine and
botany under Carl Linnaeus until late summer 1764. He then proceeded to
Edinburgh, taking his degree of Doctor of Medicine at the University of
Edinburgh in 1767. After visiting France, Holland, and Germany, he returned to
Philadelphia where he took up the practice of medicine. The flower Kuhnia
Eupatorioides named in honor of Dr. Kuhn who had carried a living plant of
false boneset with him to Upsala for description by Linnaeus. Dr. Adam
Kuhn was one of the first doctors to give free advice during the yellow fever
epidemic in Philadelphia at the time of this land grant. A letter to the editor
dated September 7, 1793, signed "A.K." was printed in Philadelphia papers,
giving directions for the treatment of the fever. Dr. Kuhn later served as
President of the Philadelphia College of Physicians from 1808 until his death in
1817. Tioga County records show a mortgage was granted to Dr. Adam Kuhn
of Philadelphia for land at the South branch of Tioga River, called Charlton,
which was granted to Charles Marshall February 18, 1798. Thomas Mifflin
(1744-1800), a member of the Continental Congress (1774-1775, 1782-1784),
was its President in 1783. A former Aide-de-Camp to General George
Washington and a Signer of the Constitution, he succeeded Benjamin Franklin
as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania (1788-1790),
becoming the first Governor of Pennsylvania (1790-1799). Alexander J.
Dallas (1759-1817) later served as Madison's Secretary of the Treasury from
1814-1816, serving as Secretary of War ad interim for five months in 1815.
