THOMAS MOORE
The poet pens an address and signing his name on this envelope
Autograph Envelope Signed: "Thos Moore" at lower right corner, 3½x2, affixed to 4x2¼ sheet. Not postmarked. Addressed by Moore to: "Miss Moore/at Miss Furnass's/Great Putteney Street/Bath". Irish poet, satirist, composer and musician Thomas Moore (1779-1852) is famed for his 10-volume Irish Melodies (1807-1834), 130 poems set to music. The work, which was credited with introducing Irish songs to a wide audience, included such now-familiar songs as "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms". He was also paid the then enormous sum of £3,000 for his narrative poem, "Lallah Rookh" (1919). An Irish nationalist, Moore was close to Robert Emmet, who was executed for his part in the uprisings of 1798 and 1803, and he wrote an eloquent eulogy for his friend. After 1822, Moore became a biographer and historian; among those prose works was a biography (1830) of his friend, Lord Byron. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly soiled. Minor show through from mounting at right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
