THOMAS MOORE
The poet pens this letter regarding Epicurean, dated 1841!
Autograph Letter Signed: "Thos. Moore", 1p, 4¼x3¼. No place, 1841 July 13. To "Dear Ingmar". In full: "I found on looking to the sheets of the Epicurean that I could not let them go without some correction, but you shall have all those sent me back tomorrow together with a short Preface. Yours very truly". Irish poet, satirist, composer and musician Thomas Moore (1779-1852) is famed for his 10-volume Irish Melodies (1807-1834), 130 poems set to music. The work included such now-familiar works as "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms." He was paid the then enormous sum of £3,000 for his narrative poem "Lallah Rookh" (1919). In 1830, he published a biography of his friend, Lord Byron. An Irish nationalist, he was close to Robert Emmet, who was executed for his part in the uprisings of 1798 and 1803. Moore contributed greatly to the modern revival of Irish music. The Epicurean: A Tale, was a prose work, originally published in 1827. Lightly soiled. Irregularly trimmed at upper edge. Strip of clear tape (¼x½-inch) at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
