THOMAS MOORE
The poet pens this letter apologizing for this late acknowledgment for the recipient's letter
Autograph Letter signed: "Thomas Moore", 1p, 4½x7¼. Place illegible, 1843 August 15. To "My dear Sir". In full: I have to apologize for not sooner acknowledging your kind and useful communication, but your letter had got astray in the heaps of correspondence I daily receive, and it was not till this moment that it turned up to reproach me with my omission. What makes it worse is that very rarely is it my lot to receive from my countless correspondents anything half so valuable or agreeable as the suggestion with which you have favored me. Pray receive my best thanks & believe me Dear Sir, Yours truly". Irish poet, satirist, composer and musician Thomas Moore (1779-1852) is famed for his 10-volume Irish Melodies (1807-1834), 130 poems set to music. It included such now-familiar works as "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms." He was paid the then enormous sum of £3,000 for his narrative poem "Lallah Rookh" (1919). In 1830 he published a biography of his friend Lord Byron. An Irish nationalist, he was close to Robert Emmet, executed for his part in the uprisings of 1798 and 1803. Moore contributed greatly to the modern revival of Irish music. Fine condition.
