THOMAS MOORE
The Irish poet pens his signature on this cut page in ink
Signature: "Thomas Moore", 3x1, irregularly cut from letter, affixed to 7¼x2¼ sheet. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper right margin of mounting sheet: "Born 1780. Died 1852". Contrary to the ink notes, Moore was born in 1779 in Dublin. Irish poet, satirist, composer and musician Thomas Moore (1779-1852) is famed for his 10-volume Irish Melodies (1807-1834), 130 poems set to music. The work, which was credited with introducing Irish songs to a wide audience, included such now-familiar songs as "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms". He was also paid the then enormous sum of £3,000 for his narrative poem, "Lallah Rookh" (1919). An Irish nationalist, Moore was close to Robert Emmet, who was executed for his part in the uprisings of 1798 and 1803, and wrote an eloquent eulogy for his friend. After 1822, Moore became a biographer and historian; among those prose works was a biography (1830) of his friend, Lord Byron. Signature sheet has vertical crease at blank area and is lightly soiled. Mounting sheet is lightly soiled and shaded. Otherwise, fine condition.
