First Day Cover honoring the Echo I communications satellite
First Day Cover signed: "Thomas S. Gates", 6½x3½. First day cover honoring the Echo I satellite and "Communications for Peace", 4-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, DC, December 15, 1960, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. The stamp was issued during Gates' tenure as President Eisenhower's Secretary of Defense (December 2, 1959 to January 20, 1961). During Ike's administration, Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr. (1906-1983) had progressed steadily from Undersecretary to Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary and then Secretary of Defense. Gates developed a good rapport with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, instituting a system of regular meetings with them. Gates also authorized the U-2 reconnaissance over-flights of the Soviet Union, leading to the U-2 crisis of May 1960. A partner in his family's business, Drexel & Co., he was appointed President of Morgan Guaranty Trust after leaving the Pentagon, and in 1966 became Chairman of the Board and CEO. Fine condition.
