THOMAS SCALLEN
Handwritten sentiment on a sheet containing his card as President of
Medicorp, the investment company through which he purchased the Vancouver
Canucks. The transaction got him jailed and then deported.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "May 1st 1968/Best regards -/Tom
Scallen -/Ice Follies", 7x9¼. Affixed below his signature is his printed
business card as President of Medical Investment Corporation, Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Thomas Scallen, a Minneapolis based lawyer and businessman,
owned the Ice Follies, and was President of Medicorp, a company investing in
the health care industry. In 1969, however, Scallen used Medicorp to
purchase an expansion franchise in the National Hockey League, locating it in
Vancouver as the Canucks. Scallen's ownership was short-lived. He was
convicted of securities fraud, spent 9 months in a Canadian prison, and was then
deported, divested from the Canucks. Though bitter about his treatment in
Canada, Scallen's interest in sports investment remained. He became President
of the International Broadcasting Corporation, owner of Ice Capades and the
Harlem Globetrotters. In 1990, he was executive prodder of a TV special
celebrating fifty years of the Ice Capades. IBC filed for bankruptcy in 1991,
however. Scallen now practices law in Minneapolis, and has invested in an arena
football team there. Lightly toned around edges. Lightly creased. Fine
condition.
