W. Burgess/November 22, 1927", 4x2½ card. Thornton Waldo Burgess
(1874-1965), a young widower, began creating bedtime stories for his young son.
These proved the origin of a series several dozen books with animal
characters, beginning with Old Mother West Wind (1910). His best
known character was Peter Cottontail. From 1912 to 1960, Burgess wrote a
syndicated daily newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories." From 1925 he hosted a
popular radio show, the Radio Nature League, and all his stories extolled nature
and its conservation. His last book, published in 1960, was Now I
Remember: Memoirs of an Amateur Naturalist. Pencil note (unknown hand) on
verso. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Lightly toned. Otherwise fine
condition.
