THREE STOOGES: JOE DeRITA
Joe DeRita signs a black and white publicity photograph of a scene from The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze.
Photograph signed: "Curly Joe". B/w, 10x8. Shown with Moe Howard (not signing) in scene from The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze. © 1963 Columbia Pictures. DeRITA (1909-1993), a former vaudevillian, made his film debut in The Doughgirls (1944). He joined forces with Moe Howard and Larry Fine in 1958, when the classic comedy of the Three Stooges enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Moe and Larry hired DeRita as the third Stooge to replace Joe Besser. DeRita was dubbed "Curly Joe" because of his resemblance to Moe's brother Curly Howard, a former Stooge. By the time DeRita joined the act, the boisterous pie-in-the-face, poke-in-the eye humor had toned down and he played a more passive third stooge. The television release of Three Stooges short films in the late 1950s however, introduced the wacky group to a new audience, spawning film projects and personal appearances. DeRita was the last surviving Stooge. Light creased not visible head on. Otherwise, fine condition.
