TILLY LOSCH
Stunning photo in fur-lined gown and pearl necklace, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. A rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/with best wishes/from Tilly Losch". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: January 19, 1938. Viennese-born dancer, choreographer and painter Ottillie "Tilly" Losch (1903-1975) performed with the Vienna Opera during World War I. A skilled ballerina, she also mastered modern dance. Losch's first husband, Anglo-American millionaire Edward Jones, financed Losch's own dance company, with George Balanchine as choreographer. She danced on London and New York stages, debuting on Broadway in The Band Wagon with Fred and Adele Astaire (1931). Losch appeared in several films, including The Garden of Allah (1936) and Song of Scheherazade (1947). During her second marriage she was the Countess of Carnarvon. Her husband the Earl financed her exhibitions of paintings, which were well received by critics. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn. Notch at center top edge. Sticker on verso. Signature lightly beaded. Otherwise, fine condition.
