history donated to Yale College Library by him as "the author"
Book signed in the Third Person: "Yale College Library/Presented
by/the Author", 528 pages, 5½x9¼, hard bound. Political and Civil History
of the United States of America from the Year 1763 to the Close of the
Administration of President Washington, in March, 1797, Vol. 1, by Timothy
Pitkin. New Haven: Hezekiah Howe and Durrie & Peck, 1822. First edition,
hardcover (but with a more recent cover). Signed on blank flyleaf. Timothy
Pitkin (1766-1847) graduated from Yale College in 1785 and was admitted to
the Connecticut bar in 1788. He concluded 15 years in the Connecticut House of
Representatives as its Speaker (1803-1805). A member of the Federalist Party,
he served in the US House from 1805 to 1819, returning to private law
practice and the state legislature thereafter. His careful and thorough works
of history, the one signed here and also his Statistical View of the
Commerce of the United States (1816) remain of great value to modern
scholars. Pitkin was also a skilled amateur astronomer who made detailed
calculations of eclipses. Binding firm and only slightly rubbed at edges. Pages
show moisture stains and foxing. Otherwise, fine condition.
