Signature: "T. S. Arthur", 3x2 card. Timothy Shay Arthur
(1809-1885) was a prolific novelist and journal contributor who
championed temperance and propriety. His Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and
What I Saw There (1854) inveighed against alcohol consumption. He
contributed many articles to Godey's Lady's Book and his own journal, Arthur's
Home Magazine. Not well regarded by the era's literati, Arthur employed
sentimentality and strident morals to shape middle class values of his time.
