film, stage, and television actor Timothy West (1934-2024) began his career onstage in
London's West End in the 1959 production of Caught Napping; he was included as a member
of the Royal Shakespeare Company for three seasons (1962, 1964, and 1965). West has
played Macbeth twice, Uncle Vanya twice, Solness from The Master Builder twice, and
King Lear three times. His big television break came when he starred in his own series Edward
the Seventh (1975), during which he played the title role from age 23 until his death; he also
appeared on television in The Thirty Nine Steps (1978), Masada (1981), and Story of
Joan of Arc (1999). In February 2013 he joined the cast of the daytime soap opera
Coronation Street playing the character of Eric Babbage. Furthermore, West works often as a
theatre director, and is the President of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and of
