TITO BURNS, TERRY DEVON
Photo signed by British jazz pioneer and his wife
Photograph signed "Terry Devon" in blue ink and "Tito Burns" in blue ink. B/w 3¼x5¼ photo mounted on 6x5¼ card. Burns, born in London in 1921, is credited with leading the first group to play bebop over British radio. His group, the Tito Burns Sextet, shown to the left in this photo, with Burns on accordion, Ray Ellington and Tony Crombie on drums and saxophonists Ronnie Scott and Johnny Dankworth, was house band for the BBC radio show Accordion Club. It wasn't a jazz show, but the band played jazz and bop whenever they got the chance. He also managed British pop star Cliff Richard early in his career. Devon was his wife and a dance band vocalist. Lightly toned. Top of mounting card is discolored from adhesive, has been neatly torn from a larger sheet and is lightly creased. Otherwise in fine condition.
