TITO GOBBI
Small 4x5¾ b/w bust photo by Foto Villoresi of baritone Tito Gobbi in a suit and tie, signed in Malta in 1949
Inscribed photograph signed "Tito Gobbi./1949" in blue ink, with two-line inscription in untranslated Italian. Blue pencil marks on verso. B/w, 4x5¾ overall, 3¾x5½ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Captioned in bottom left corner: "Tito Gobbi". Photo by Foto Villoresi and A. Tergoli of Rome, Italy. Best known for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini (especially Scarpa in Puccini's Tosca), respected Italian baritone Gobbi (1915-1984) was an excellent actor with an intelligent and flexible singing voice... not to mention a huge repertory of over 100 roles, including roles from relatively obscure composers like Lualdi, Napoli and Ghedini. Gobbi debuted in 1935 as Count Rodolfo in Bellini's La Sonnambula, but didn't find fame until 1942, when he performed the title role in the first Italian performance of Wozzeck. His career exploded in the post war years, with appearances in Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Stockholm and San Francisco, among others. Gobbi also appeared in over 20 movies between 1937 and 1955, mostly in film adaptations of operas. He retired in 1979. Lightly toned, silvered creased and bowed, otherwise in fine condition.
