TITO GOBBI
British program for an undated performance of Baritone Tito Gobbi with Yvonne Catterall and pianist Ivor Newton, signed by Gobbi
Program signed "Tito Gobbi". 4 pages, 7½x10, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Sixpence program for an undated performance of Tito Gobbi and Yvonne Catterall, with Ivor Newton on piano, presented by the Classical Opera Company and Lynford Joel Ltd. of London, England. Best known for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini (especially Scarpa in Puccini's Tosca), respected Italian baritone Gobbi (1915-1984) was an excellent actor with an intelligent and flexible singing voice... not to mention a huge repertory of over 100 roles, including roles from relatively obscure composers like Lualdi, Napoli and Ghedini. Gobbi debuted in 1935 as Count Rodolfo in Bellini's La Sonnambula, but didn't find fame until 1942, when he performed the title role in the first Italian performance of Wozzeck. His career exploded in the post war years, with appearances in Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Stockholm and San Francisco, among others. Gobbi also appeared in over 20 movies between 1937 and 1955, mostly in film adaptations of operas. He retired in 1979. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Spine is worn and fragile with separations at bottom edge and pinholes. Light tears along all edges. Rounded corners. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
