Signed baseball from the AAA level, with many players headed for or coming from the Majors
Baseball signed: "Vicente Palacios", "Bake McBride", "Lonnie Smith", "Duffy Dyer", "Paul Noce", "Tom McCraw", "David Green", "John Cangelosi", "Pat Corrales", "Tito Landrum", "Toby Harrah", "Wayne Krenchicki", "Rod Booker", "Rocky Bridges" and 6 unidentified signatures. Rawlings official National League baseball, A. Bartlett Giamatti, President. The International League is one of two AAA leagues in American baseball (the other being the Pacific Coast League). AAA being the level right below the Major Leagues, fans attending International League games will see a high quality of baseball executed by future Major League players, plus many past and present Major Leaguers undergoing physical rehabilitation or trying to prolong their careers. The managers and coaches, too, are usually Major League veterans. Tickets are very affordable, and fans have a better chance of meeting players and getting autographs than they would in the big league parks. PAT CORRALES caught for 10 years and managed three Major League teams (Rangers, Phillies and Indians) before taking the helm of the Toledo Mud Hens in 1988. (While this might be seen as a demotion, minor league coaches and managers play an essential role in preparing young players for the Majors. A big league team without a strong farm system is a team in serious trouble.) ROCKY BRIDGES, a 10-year Major League infielder with 7 clubs, won 1,300 games as a minor league manager between 1964 and 1989. In 1988 outfielder, LONNIE SMITH, temporarily a member of the Rochester Braves, was on the verge of a remarkable comeback. The only Major League to have played on three different World Championship franchises within a span of six years (1980 Phillies, 1982 Cardinals, 1985 Royals), Smith slumped during the 1987 season. Depressed and high on marijuana, he bought a gun with which to kill Royals General Manager John Schuerholz, but thought better of it. Moving to the Braves organization, he was the Comeback Player of the Year in 1989. (He hit three home runs for the Braves in the 1991 World Series, but - quite unfairly - is remembered as the goat as that Series, because his base running error lost the Braves a chance to win Game 7 against the Twins. Instead, the Braves lost 1-0 in extra innings. BAKE McBRIDE, the National League's Rookie of the Year with the Cardinals in 1973, was an 11-year Major League veteran known best for his years with the outstanding Phillies teams of the late 1970s, including the franchise's only World Championship (1980). Four-time AL All-Star TOBY HARRAH played most of his big league career (1969-1986) with the Texas Rangers, and he would manage the Rangers in 1992. Harrah was the player from the Washington Senators to retire as a player. He was also the last batter to stand at the plate in a Senators uniform. (He didn't finish the at bat; TOM McCRAW, another signer of this baseball, was thrown out attempting to steal second, and thus made the last out on the Senators ball club before the team moved to Texas. First baseman McCraw's American League career extended from 1963 to 1975. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
