Autograph letter signed "Tom Batiuk". 1 page, 8½x11, on Funky Winkerbean stationery. Jan. 8, 1987. In full: "Dear Mr. Gamble, Inclosed [sic] is a Funky Winkerbean cartoon for your collection. Sincerely". American cartoonist Batiuk, born in 1947, began drawing cartoons in elementary school for his school newspaper. He's probably best known for Funky Winkerbean, which grew out of his experiences as a junior high school art teacher. Begun in 1972 as a gag-a-day strip, Funky Winkerbean has evolved longer storylines and included serious plotlines. In 1986, it was the first comic to explore teen pregnancy in an ongoing character, and has also included plotlines involving alcoholism, terrorism, attempted suicide, racism, dating violence and even breast cancer and dyslexia. Batiuk has also written the cartoon John Darling (whose main character was murdered in the final strip) and Crankshaft, starring Funky Winkerbean's bus driver. Lightly toned and creased. Missing right bottom corner with tears along bottom edge. Rust stains at top edge. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
