TOM CLANCY
He signs a typescript of the first page of his best-selling novel Clear and Present Danger
Typescript signed: "Tom Clancy", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "Clear and Present Danger/By/Tom Clancy". Opening lines of Chapter One, which is entitled, "The King of SAR", from his 1989 novel, Clear and Present Danger. In the book, Clancy's signature character, ex-Marine Jack Ryan, fights a Colombian drug war and finally meets John Clark, and the character of "Ding" Chavez is introduced. The 1994 film based on the book starred Harrison Ford as Ryan and Willem Dafoe as Clark. A pioneer of the techno-thriller, insurance broker Tom Clancy (1947-2013) combined his lifelong interests in the military and technology in his first novel, The Hunt For Red October (1984). The book, which became an instant best-seller, introduced Ryan, who became a government operative in later novels, including Patriot Games (1987) and Clear and Present Danger. By 2000, Ryan was the newly elected President, facing sinister forces at work in China in The Bear and The Dragon, and by 2003, Ryan had retired from the presidency and his son, Jack Ryan, Jr., an intelligence analyst, and Ryan's two nephews were poised to become the central characters in Clancy's future works. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
