Black and white publicity photograph of Ewell-thoughtfully leaning his chin on his palm!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Walter/with thanks &/best wishes/Tom". B/w, 7¼x9. Photograph by Friedman-Abeles. Dated on verso: "1959". In the year he signed this photograph, Ewell appeared on two TV anthologies: The United States Steel Hour and General Electric Theater. The following year, he would star in his own sitcom. A stage actor from 1928, Tom Ewell (1909-1994), born S. Yewell Tompkins, did not land big roles until after his naval service in WWII. He then scored two big Broadway successes, John Loves Mary (1947) and The Seven Year Itch (1954), winning a Tony for the latter and reprising the role opposite Marilyn Monroe in the film version the following year (for which he won a Golden Globe). Not a classic leading man, Ewell often played wayward husbands (Adam Rib, 1949) or ordinary soldiers (Up Front, 1951). He had his own TV sitcom for a year (The Tom Ewell Show, 1960-1961) and a regular role on Baretta (1975-1978). Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Photographer's stamp and ink and pencil notes on verso (no show through). Irregularly cut at lower edge.
