Fitzgerald (b. 1968) is a retired NHL right wing, who played 17 seasons for
the New York Islanders (1988-1993), the Florida Panthers
(1993-1998), the Colorado Avalanche (1997-1998), the Nashville
Predators (1998-2002), the Chicago Blackhawks (2001-2002), the
Toronto Maple Leafs (2002-2004) and the Boston Bruins (2005-2006).
Drafted in the first round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, Fitzgerald spent
his first years split between the Islanders and their AHL team, the
Springfield Indians with whom he won the Calder Cup in 1990; he also is
noted as the first player in NHL history to score two shorthand goals on the
same minor penalty on May 2, 1993 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, also setting
the record for shorthand goals by a player in one game. His was chosen to be
one of the original players for the Panthers in 1993, where he had his best
scoring years and even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1996.
Fitzgerald was later traded to the Predators, who sought his veteran
leadership and was named their first ever captain. He played 1097 games in
the NHL with 139 goals and 190 assists and 776 penalty minutes. He retired in
2006, becoming an analyst for NESN's Bruins coverage, and coached until 2009
when he was name assistant General Manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
