TOM MIX
His pencil signature on an album leaf
Signature: "Tom Mix" in pencil, 4¾x4¼ album leaf. Also signed in pencil on verso: "Wallace Twins/Betsy Wallace", "Cora Wallace". A skilled horseman from childhood, TOM MIX (1880-1940) was hired to round up cattle for the film Ranch Life in the Great Southwest (1910), and was assigned a supporting role in the film. The film's producers, Selig Polyscope, retained him as an actor, and from 1911-1917 he appeared in over 100 one- and two-reelers, often producing and/or directing his films. Selig went out of business in 1917 and Mix was signed by Fox, which starred him in the westerns that established him as the premier cowboy star. His success helped Fox become a major studio. In the late 20s and early 30s, he quit films for three years to tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus with his famous horse, Tony. From 1932-1935 he starred in several talkie westerns, then retired from the screen. He was 60 when he was killed in a car crash. No information is available on the Wallace twins. Fine condition.
