TOM "MOBY" McCLEAN.
Envelope carried when he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean
Commemorative Envelope signed: "T. McClean", 6x3½. Special cover with a cachet captioned: "Carried by Tom 'Moby McClean on his epic single-handed Atlantic row of 70 days 17 hours." Postmarked National Postal Museum, London, July 29 1969, 5-cent stamp affixed (commemorating the first non-stop Atlantic flight by Alcock and Brown, June 14-18, 1919). No. 210 of an issue of 400. Ink note (unknown hand): "(Moby)/McClean". Without prior experience at sea, the former British paratrooper became in 1969 the first to row single-handed across the North Atlantic Ocean. In 1987, at age 44, McClean recaptured the record for shortest single row across this stretch, cutting his time to 54 days. In 1982, he set another record: shortest yacht (9'9") to cross the Atlantic. After this record was bested by an American, McClean cut 2 feet off the yacht with a chainsaw and recaptured the mark in 1983. In 1996, the intrepid McClean crossed the Atlantic in a bottle, albeit a 32-footer equipped with a 4-poster bed and sophisticated navigation equipment. Since 1970 McClean has also operated an Adventure Centre in the Scottish Highlands. Unsurprisingly, he is in demand as a motivational speaker. Label stain (1x½-inch) in lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
