TOM STEELE. Partly Printed DS: "Tom Steele", 1p, 8½x6. No place, 1973 April 27. Headed: "Employment of Day Player". Steele is employed as a "Utility Stunt Man" in the production Black Bart at a daily rate of $138. Steele has filled in his Legal Resident State ("Calif"), written "yes" on the lines asking if he is a Citizen of U.S. and is married and has filled in his date of birth ("6-12-09"). Also signed by the Casting Director. We could find no reference to Black Bart in Steele's credits, but Steele appeared in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles in 1974. Legendary Scottish-born stuntman/actor Tom Steele (1909-1990) was the only stuntman under contract to Republic Pictures, which often cast its serial heroes to for their resemblance to the handsome Steele. Steele, who starred in Republic's serial, The Masked Marvel, often played three to four characters in other films and doubled for such actors as Roy Rogers, Rod Cameron, Clayton Moore and George Montgomery. Steele, who made his film debut in 1937, appeared in a number of feature films, including The Thing (1951), Spartacus (1960), Cat Ballou (1965), Harper (1966), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and The Blues Brothers (1980), and did stunts for a number of TV shows, from Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok (1951) to Hondo (1967). Lightly creased. 2 file holes at upper blank margin, ½-inch diameter stain at lower right next to signature of casting director. Fine condition.
