TOM STOPPARD. Signature: "Tom Stoppard", 5x3 card. British
playwright Tom Stoppard (born Tomás Straussler in 1937 in Czechoslovakia) has
won Tony Awards for Best Play for Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are
Dead (1968), Travesties (1976) and The Real Thing (1984). He
was also nominated for Tonys in the same category for Arcadia
(1995, also the winner of the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award) and The
Invention of Love (2001; nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theatre
Award). In his early years, Stoppard wrote extensively for BBC radio,
but he branched out to write for films and television, winning the Academy
Award for Best Original Screenplay for Shakespeare in Love and
receiving an Oscar nomination for the screenplay for Brazil
(1985). His other credits include scripts for films including Empire of the
Sun (1987), The Russia House (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991) and
Enigma (2001), and Stoppard has written numerous made-for-TV
movies. He is also the author of one novel, Lord Malquist and Mr.
Moon (1966). Stoppard, who was appointed CBE in 1978, was
knighted in 1997 and appointed Order of Merit in 2000. Slightly
