The First Day Cover features a five cent stamp depicting the painting Jerked Down, a work by Charles M. Russell. In the painting, three ranchers are depicted trying to lasso a cow. Postmarked Great Falls, Montana, March 19, 1964. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Tom Stout (1879-1965) was a newspaper publisher and editor for most of his life, first entering publishing in 1902. He worked for the Fergus County Democrat and the Lewistown Democrat News for a total of 44 years. From 1913-1917, he represented Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also served in the Montana Senate (1910-1913) and the Montana House of Representatives (1942-1948). While he intermittently served in elected office, he was, first and foremost, a newspaper man. He wrote in the editorial pages of the Billings Gazette from 1947-1960. Pinholes on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
