TOM T. CHAMALES
Extremely rare signature to a fan from the troubled Never So
Few author, writing "Best wishes"
Autograph note signed: "To Kayo -/Best wishes/Tom T.
Chamales", in black felt tip, 4½x3. Author Tom T. Chamales
(1924-1960) was only in this world briefly, but made his mark before he
left, being remembered as a talented but troubled writer. A veteran from OSS Detachment 101, Chamales wrote a bestselling novel,
Never So Few, based on his time with the unit. The novel was
turned into a film of the same name starring Frank Sinatra, released in
1959. He married actress Helen O'Connell in 1957, but the union was a
tumultuous and unhappy one; a violent man, Chamales often had violent and
public arguments with O'Connell, and was arrested in 1958 after threating
O'Connell with a knife in their home. The couple eventually separated, and
Chamales moved to an apartment in Los Angeles. He passed away in March of
1960 after falling asleep smoking a cigarette in his apartment, dying in the
ensuing flames. Slightly toned. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso.
Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
