TOMMY BYRNE
The pitcher is shown winding up to throw wearing his New York Yankees
uniform.
Photograph signed: "Tommy Byrne" in blue ink, Color 8x10. As a
young Yankee pitcher, Tommy Byrne (1919-2007) was notorious for his
wildness. He led the league in walks allowed three years in a row
(1949-1951), and led in hit batsmen five times. He once hit a batter waiting in
the on deck circle. Even though he had won 15 games in back to back
seasons (1950-1951), the Yankees exiled him to a 3-year tour with the St.
Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators. He returned to the
Yankees in 1954, having mastered his control, and went 16-5 the following year.
Byrne pitched in six World Series games over 4 seasons, and was the losing
pitcher in Game 7 of the 1955 Series, the first ever won by the Brooklyn
Dodgers. Byrne was Mayor of Wake Forest, North Carolina for 14 years
(1973-1987). Fine condition.
