TOMMY NEWSOM and GUS BIVONA
Newsom's signature in red ink, Bivona's in blue, acquired in 1978
Signatures: "Tommy Newsom", "Gus Bivona", 5 ¼ x 8. Ink caption (unknown hand) at lower edge, including date: January 25, 1978. Saxophonist and arranger TOMMY NEWSOM (1929-2007, born in Portsmouth, Virginia) joined the Tonight show in 1962, shortly before Johnny Carson began hosting it, and stayed with the program for 30 years, retiring when Carson did. Carson dubbed Newsom "Mr. Excitement," spoofing his deadpan expression and bland style of dress. Newsom shared Emmy awards for music arrangment in 1982 (for a TV special) and 1986 (for the Tony Awards ceremony). GUS BIVONA (1915-1996), who played sax and flute but was best known for his clarinet, played with many of the great big bands from the late 1930s, including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Les Brown. He appeared on TV and many recordings his close friend Steve Allen. A studio musician for MGM from 1947, he played on many movie sound tracks. Bivona's own orchestra cut records for Mercury and Warner Bros. in the 1950s and sixties. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Right edge slightly toned. Otherwise fine condition.
