TONEY PENNA
7x9 sepia photo of the famed golf club designer, shown swinging a
wood in front of an impressive clubhouse, with a caddy standing by
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Claude who has/the Best Golf
Courses/in the/ West! Sincerely/Toney Penna". Sepia, 7x9. Toney Penna
(1908-1995) was a fine golfer, who won several tournaments of the 1930s and
forties, including the Pennsylvania Open (1937) and the North South Open
(1948). He was on friendly terms with golf-oriented business people and
celebrities, including Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. Penna's greatest
claim to fame, however, was as a designer of golf clubs and golf equipment.
As chief club designer for MacGregor until 1967, and for his own company
thereafter, Penna designed clubs renowned for their performance and styling. His
woods, including the white persimmon woods he created for MacGregor, and his own
red, white and blue bicentennial driver from 1976, command top dollars from
collectors. His irons are also very rare and valued today. Edges worn with
multiple notches. Lightly toned. Paper affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
