Self-Caricature signed: "Self caricature/from/Tonio Selwart", 8¾x5¾.
Drawn and signed in black ink. Antonio Selwart (1896-2002), a Bavarian-born
actor who went by Tonio in recognition of the Italian part of his ancestry,
served in the Austrian army in World War I. A star of French and Italian
films, who never appeared in a German one, he played supporting roles in
English-language films, often as a German official or soldier. He played
theater stages throughout Europe. He scored a big Broadway success as the
star of The Pursuit of Happiness (1933-1934), often quipping
thereafter that he became a "matinee idol for a year." Vertical fold creases,
touching "t" of Stewart. Lightly stained at upper right blank edge. Lightly
creased at upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
