TONY McKEGNEY
This newspaper cut-out shows the NHL hockey player in Buffalo Sabres uniform
Newspaper photograph signed: "Tony McKegney" in blue felt. 8x10. Tony Mckegney (b.
1958) is a retired NHL right winger who played thirteen seasons of professional hockey
with the Buffalo Sabres (1978-1983), Quebec Nordiques (1983-1985), Minnesota North
Stars (1986-1987), New York Rangers (1986-1987), St. Louis Blues (1987-1989), Detroit
Red Wings (1989-1990), and Chicago Blackhawks (1990-1991). Before he joined the NHL,
Mckegney signed a deal with the WHA's Birmingham team; however, the owner illegally
cancelled the contract after protests ensued against Mckegney because he was an African
American. Mckegney would become the victor overall when the WHA went defunct and the
NHL drafted him to the Sabres in 1978. Mckegney had an impressive career, playing 912
games, earning 320 goals and 319 assists. He also established the record for most points in a
given season scored by a black player (78 points in 1987-88 season), which was not
broken until 2001 by Jarome Iginla. Edges irregular. Lightly toned backing sheet. Corners
rounded and creased. Three holes punched in left edge. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso.
Otherwise, fine condition.
