MINNESOTA TWINS: TONY OLIVA and SANDY VALDESPINO
The two Cubans, teammates on the Twins' first pennant winner, sign handwritten notes
Autograph Note signed: "To David/Best Wishes/from/Tony Oliva", "Best wishes to Dabie/Sandy Valdespino", 8x10½. Printed letterhead: "Memorandum/Office of the Vice President/Washington". TONY OLIVA (b. 1938), who played 15 seasons (1962-1976) with the Minnesota Twins, retired with 1,917 hits and a .304 career average. The Cuban-born Oliva is the only player to win batting titles in his first two seasons, and led the league in hits five times. The 8-time All-Star was the 1964 American League Rookie of the Year. Chronic injuries derailed what had promised to be a Hall of Fame career. The Twins retired Oliva's #6, and a statue of him adorns their new ballpark. SANDY VALDESPINO, born in Cuba in 1939 (one year after Oliva) was a Major League outfielder from 1965 to 1971. Although he played for five teams, his best years came as Oliva's teammate on the Twins (1965-1967). The two Cubans roamed the outfield together on Minnesota's first ever AL pennant-winner in 1965, losing the World Series to the LA Dodgers in seven games. Fold crease through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
