TONY PASTOR
B/w publicity photo of big band leader Tony Pastor in a suit and tie and holding a saxophone, signed "Best of luck" in blue ink. Pastor got his start as a saxophonist.
Inscribed photograph signed "To Frank-/A fine guy-/Best of luck/Tony Pastor" in blue ink. B/w, 8x10 overall, 7¼x8½ image, one surface. Photo by General Amusement Corp. Captioned: "TONY PASTOR/And His Orchestra". Pastor (1907-1969, born Antonio Pestritto in Middletown, Connecticut) was a big band leader and novelty singer who took pains to emphasize his Italian heritage in his acts. Pastor was a saxophonist in high school and parlayed this into jobs on several bands. The most notable of these were saxophonist positions in Artie Shaw's first two big bands, including his highly successful orchestra of the late 1930s, where Pastor was a standout player and gained his own fame. After the mercurial Shaw broke up the band in 1939 and moved to Mexico, Pastor formed his own band, which lasted until 1959, then formed a vocal group with his sons and continued performing until 1968. Lightly toned, cracked, creased and bowed. Pen skipped while writing signature, which is legible. Light tear at top edge. Developing error at bottom left corner. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Light scratches on image (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
