Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo, was born on April 21, 1980 in
Burlington, Wisconsin. Born a gifted athlete, Romo played starting quarterback in High
School as well as playing basketball, golf and tennis. He attended college at Eastern Illinois
University where he was a three time All-American and was the recipient of the 2002
Walter Payton Award. In 2009, the school retired his No. 17 jersey and inducted him into
the school's Hall of Fame. In 2003 he attended the NFL combine but went undrafted that
year. However, he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent and would play
as the third string quarterback for America's team until 2006. After starting quarterback
Drew Bledsoe was injured, Romo was named starting quarterback and would finally get his
chance at NFL glory. That season he threw for 2,903 yards and 19 touchdowns, leading his
team to a close playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks. In 2007, his first full season as a
starter, Romo surpassed all Cowboys quarterbacks before him by throwing a record 36
touchdowns and 4,211 yards passing in one season. However, the season would end with
another close playoff loss, this time to the NFC east rival New York Giants. In 2008,
Romo put up impressive statistics again, but the season ended in a 44-6 playoff loss to the
Philadelphia Eagles. In his 2009 season, he broke the 4,000 yard mark in passing for his
second time, and won his first playoff game in a 34-14 win against the Philadelphia
Eagles, but he would lose two fumbles and throw an interception in the NFC divisional playoff
game against the Minnesota Vikings, for his fourth playoff loss. Romo, as the starter for the
Dallas Cowboys, has proven himself as one of the best in the game; his 95.5 career QB
rating is fourth on the all-time list. But his inability to win in playoff games has been the
defining point of his career. Fine condition.
