CITO GASTON, who had managed the Blue Jays to World Championships in 1992
and 1993, failed to finish the 1997 season at the helm, as Toronto suffered its
fourth straight sub-.500 season. GENE TENACE, Blue Jays coach (1990-1997)
also left at the end of the season. He had picked up his fifth and sixth World
Series rings with the '92-'93 Jays, after earning four as a catcher with the A's
and Cardinals. GORDON ASH was General Manager of the Blue Jays from 1995
to 2001. ALFREDO GRIFFIN, Toronto's slick fielding shortstop in its
championship seasons, was also a coach by 1997. WILLIE UPSHAW played for
the team in its early years (1978-1987). Pitcher ROY HALLIDAY did not
make the team's Major League roster until 1998. He did not emerge as a star
starter until the next decade (41 wins in 1992-1993). Other signers include key
members of the lineup and rotation, including Catcher SANTIAGO, 1st
baseman DELGADO, shortstop GONZALEZ and starter HENTGEN.
The Blue Jays remain the only team based outside the United States to have
won a Major League World Series. Fine condition.
