Entertainment. Total Recall (1990) is based on the Phillip K. Dick short
story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. It was directed by
Verhoeven and starred Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a common laborer who
learns he has the memories and fighting skills of a super spy. It was nominated
for two Oscars in technical categories. SCHWARZENEGGER, born in Thal,
Styria, Austria in 1947, after winning several European contests and
international titles (including Mr. Olympia), came to the U.S. for body-building
exhibitions, billing himself immodestly but fairly accurately as "The Austrian
Oak". A millionaire before the age of 22, Schwarzenegger decided to try
acting -- and has become hugely successful at it. With his Conan
movies (two), the actor established himself as an action star. He went on to
star as the murderous android title character in three The Terminator
films. As Danny De Vito's unlikely pacifistic sibling in Twins
(1988), Schwarzenegger received the praise of critics who noted his
"unsuspected" comic expertise. In Kindergarten Cop (1991), Schwarzenegger
played a hard-bitten police detective who found his true life's calling as a
schoolteacher. He is married to JFK's niece, Maria Shriver. In a special
recall election in 2003, moderate Republican Schwarzenegger replaced Democrat
Gray Davis as Governor of California. After four ballot initiatives he
supported were soundly defeated in 2004, Schwarzenegger moved to the political
center, fashioned some bipartisan agreements with the state legislature, and
easily won reelection in 2006. VERHOEVEN, born in Amsterdam,
Noord-Holland, the Netherlands, is a Dutch director, producer and writer with
almost 30 movies to his credit. Verhoeven's movies include shoot-em-ups like
Robocop (1987), Total Recall (1990) and Starship Troopers
(1997) and erotic movies like Basic Instinct (1992) and Showgirls
(1995). His oeuvre have been called violent and mysoginistic and have earned
him a Worst Director Razzie Award for Showgirls. But he has countered
that "...it is my sincere opinion film only reflects the violence of society."
When you consider that some of his earliest memories are of fighter planes
falling into the fields near his home during World War II, then this explanation
makes some sense. Verhoeven got his start directing short films in 1960, but had
to wait 13 years for his first international hit Turkish Delight, his
first of many collaboations with cinematographer Jan be Bont and the first movie
to include a recurrent theme through his movies, that of sexual obsession. His
movies after this includd Cathy Tippel (1975), about a girl who is sold
into prostitution by her poverty-stricken family; the grim coming-of-age tale
Soldier of Orange (1978); and the obsession-filled Spetters (1980)
and The Fourth Man (1983). Lightly soiled, scuffed and creased. Pen
skipped while writing Schwarzenegger's signature. Adhesive residue in upper
right corner. Light impression from disc on cover. Other light impressions (not
visible head-on) and scratches on cover. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine
condition.
