TRACY STALLARD, JACK FISHER, PAUL FOYTACK, BILL
MONBOUQUETTE and MUDCAT GRANT
20x16 photo showing Roger Maris rounding the bases after hitting his 61st home run to
top Ruth's season record. Signed by Tracy Stallard (shown on the mound) and four other
pitchers who tossed gopher balls to Maris that season
Photograph signed: "Tracy Stallard", "Jack Fisher #60", "Paul Foytack #1",
"Mudcat/Grant/#56", "Bill Monboquette ##33-36". B/w, 20x16. Captioned in lower margin.
Accompanied by candid color photos of four of these pitchers, signing. In 1961, Yankees
Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle pursued Babe Ruth's long-standing record of 60 home runs
in the 1927 season. On October 1 at Yankee Stadium, Maris broke the record with the home
run off TRACY STALLARD of the Red Sox, the only run scored in the game. (Stallard,
while admitting he would be little remembered if he hadn't grooved that fastball to Maris,
denies having yielded the homer intentionally. Stallard had already gotten Maris to fly out
weakly in the first inning of one of the best games he ever pitched.) Also signing here are
JACK FISHER, who gave up the record-tying #60 on the mound for the Baltimore Orioles;
PAUL FOYTACK, the Detroit Tiger who yielded homer #1, JIM "MUDCAT" GRANT of
the Cleveland Indians, who tossed #56; and BILL MONBOUQUETTE, twice a victim as a
Red Sox hurler. The "victims" here would have made a respectable starting rotation for any
team. Maris wasn't just feasting off weak pitchers in the season which saw the expansion of the
American League from 8 to 10 teams. Maris' record originally carried an asterisk in the record
books, because it was achieved in 162 games, versus Ruth's 154, but unlike the players who
have broken his record since, Maris achieved it without any allegations of
performance-enhancing chemicals. Accompanied by PSA/DNA Certificate of Authenticity
(H81763) and authentication sticker affixed to photograph. Fine condition.
