TRACY STALLARD
Stallard signs a photo of Yankee Roger Maris celebrating his record-breaking 61st home
run, stroked on a pitch from the Red Sox hurler on October 1, 1961.
Photograph signed: "Tracy Stallard/Maris 61st homer/10/1/61". B/w, 10x8. Maris is pictured
here holding up a Yankees jersey with the number #61. After 5 seasons in the minor leagues,
Tracy Stallard (1937-2017) became a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in1961. On
the final day of the season, Maris hit his 61st home run off Stallard, breaking Babe Ruth's
record of 60 in a season which had stood since 1927. Stallard, who pitched for the Red
Sox, Mets and Cardinals through 1966, considered this game the best he had ever pitched,
losing 1-0 on the Maris clout. Ironically, this was the only hit Maris ever got off Stallard in 7
at bats. Stallard now expresses gratitude for the play, which assured him a place in baseball
history, but denies that he intentionally "grooved" the pitch for Maris to hit. Although three
National League batters (Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa) have since hit more
homers in a season, the Maris total of 61 remains the American League record. Fine condition.
